Manifesting my way?

The concept of manifestation is an increasingly widespread belief in willing something into existence through focused thought and unwavering belief. The concept is finding its way into leadership discussions as a personal model for success.

The question: Should manifestation be part of the leadership practices of a faith-based leader?

The Bible teaches that God has a divine plan for us (Jeremiah 29:11). We are called to trust His timing and wisdom, even when things don't go according to our plans (Proverbs 16:9).

The Bible emphasizes trusting in God's providence and not our own desires:

  • God's Sovereignty: The Bible establishes God's ultimate authority over everything. Passages like Ephesians 1:11 speak of God's "eternal purpose" that He accomplishes according to His will.

  • God's Knowledge: God knows what is best for us, even when we don't. Isaiah 55:8-9 assures us that His ways and thoughts are far above ours.

  • Submitting to God's Will: The Bible calls us to submit to God's will and seek Him first in all things (Matthew 6:33). James 4:7 instructs us to "submit yourselves, then, to God."

The concept of manifestation can be alluring, promising empowerment, but it also carries the risk of disappointment and a feeling of powerlessness if our desired outcomes aren't realized. On the other hand, the Bible offers a different kind of empowerment: trusting in a loving God who has a purpose for our lives.

Of course, setting and acting toward goals is undoubtedly feasible within God’s will. He promises to help us in our pursuit as long as our will is not contrary to His moral will (commandments, principles). The Bible certainly makes room for positive thinking and taking action to accomplish goals. However, we run contrary to God’s will when we believe that our future is controlled by our thoughts without God's intervention and support. To do so, we envision a world without an all-powerful God but rather a disorganized collection of individual wills eventually acting contrary to each other.

While we can pray for our desires, true fulfillment comes from aligning our will with God's will and following His leading. Be cautious in your attribution of where your success originates. Place your trust with caution.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5-6).
