Get Visible at Work
Unfortunately, the adage “out of sight, out of mind” can be true in an organization. To truly thrive, you must be seen and heard and increase your visibility. This doesn't mean self-promotion at the expense of others but rather strategic actions that showcase your skills, contributions, and value.
Here are some effective ways to get noticed:
Deliver exceptional work: This is the foundation. Consistently meeting deadlines, exceeding expectations, and taking initiative demonstrate your reliability and talent. Indispensable leaders gain the leverage to negotiate their dream role.
Seek feedback: Regularly request feedback from your manager (without appearing needy) and colleagues. Use it to improve your work and demonstrate your commitment to growth.
Share your successes (humbly): Briefly highlight your achievements in meetings with our boss, acknowledging the support of others. Consider sending a “Friday Email” in which you include a brief description of your (1) High-level accomplishments this week, (2) High-level goals for next week, and (3) decisions or resources you need from your boss. In our experience, leaders appreciate being informed and can respond to you easily via routine email.
Run into Burning Buildings: Taking on projects that no one else wants to tackle is a great way to gain visibility and develop your leadership skills at the same time. Step outside your comfort zone and seek challenging assignments that will allow you to showcase your abilities.
Speak up in meetings: Share your ideas and questions thoughtfully. Be prepared, concise, and respectful to earn recognition.
Offer solutions, not just problems: When identifying issues, propose potential solutions to show initiative and problem-solving skills.
Network actively: Build relationships with colleagues across departments. Attend company events, participate in discussions, and offer help when you can.
Become an expert: Share your expertise by mentoring colleagues, participating in internal training, or creating informative resources. Become an expert in knowledge that will be required in the future. Educate your organization on the topic. Eventually, you will be the go-to person, even if the area of expertise doesn’t fit your current role.
Embrace technology: Utilize internal communication platforms, project management tools, and social media (if appropriate) to share updates and progress.
To get noticed, authenticity is key. Be yourself, but be your best self. Let your genuine enthusiasm and passion shine through. Consider how your actions contribute to the team and the company's goals.
Visibility is about connection. Nurture positive relationships with colleagues and your manager for mutual support and growth.
By implementing these strategies, you can increase your visibility, gain recognition for your talents, and open doors to exciting opportunities in your career journey.
We are reminded in Colossians 3:23-24 that we should invest an effort in our work as if we are working for God. In doing so, opportunities and visibility will be orchestrated by God on your behalf.
