The Illusion of Control

As leaders, we often feel pressure to control every aspect of our lives. We strive for perfection, efficiency, and predictability. But this relentless pursuit of control can lead to anxiety, burnout, and a sense of overwhelming responsibility.

The truth is we cannot control everything. Life is unpredictable, and unexpected challenges will arise. When we try to micromanage every detail, we create unnecessary stress and anxiety.

The Bible reminds us, "In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety" (Psalm 4:8). This verse speaks to the importance of trusting in God's sovereignty and finding peace in His provision. But we refuse to accept the “You alone” part.

We crave control. Our safety and security, we reason, come from our ability to control our circumstances. The fact is that our circumstances will always be beyond our control. It is the nature of living in a world controlled by a sovereign God.

We must grow to trust God with every aspect of our leadership, career trajectory, and accomplishments.

How can leaders trust God for the outcomes of their lives and their safety?

  1. Recognize your limitations. As leaders, it's essential to acknowledge that you cannot control everything. Trying to do so will only lead to frustration and burnout.

  2. Surrender your control. Give your worries and anxieties to God. Trust that He is in control and that His plans for you are good.

  3. Seek God's guidance. Pray regularly and ask for God's wisdom and direction. Trust that He will lead you on the right path.

  4. Practice prayer. Praying to a power greater than yourself can help frame life, help you stay present, and reduce stress.

  5. Build a support network. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you. A strong support system can help you cope with challenges and find peace.

  6. Focus on what you can control. Instead of trying to control everything, focus on the things you can influence. This might include your attitude, your actions, and your relationships.

  7. Trust in God's timing. Remember that God's timing is perfect. Trust that He will work things out in His way and at His pace.

We can find peace and fulfillment by trusting in God and surrendering our control. We can let go of the stress and anxiety that come with trying to be in control of everything. And we can experience the joy and peace that comes from knowing that we are in God's loving hands.
